Split Screen Apollo 11 – Remastered

The split screen technique in film and video production where there is a visible division of the screen, this can be either directly in half but can also be divided into several simultaneous images. This can be quite jarring to the viewer as it ruptures the illusion of the screens frame that is supposed to represent a seamless view of reality, that is comparable to that of the human eye.

The split screen effect is employed to allow an actor to appear twice in a scene, or to show a comparison or a connection between to specific images or scenes. It is also seen when you are connecting scenes that are separated by great distances be that either distance in time or distance of in space. The natural split screen method has become increasingly popular in recent years where you use the lines and spaces that occur naturally within the scene that is being filmed. Such as by the environment around the actors or by using props to create an illusion of separation between the subjects.

Looking at a short clip of the Apollo 11 film that uses both film and images that have been remastered it takes advantage of the split screen effect to introduce the audience to similar and connecting scenes. In this short clip it is used to show the various jobs within the command room in a condensed time frame. By using various combinations of clips that make use of the size or number of clips that are being displayed for the viewer on the screen at any one time it allows the director to capture and keep the audiences attention whilst also showing clips that are basically the same.
